The Red Queen’s race from Lewis Carrol’s Through The Looking-Glass is often used to describe eternal struggles in adaptation such as the one in evolutionary biology, economics, and business, to name a few. It can be seen in cyber security as a perpetual arms race between the adversary and the defender. Matt Ridley’s book The Red Queen ² described this effect as it relates to security quite well:

In chess or in football, the tactic that proves most effective is soon the one that people learn to block easily. Every innovation in attack is soon countered by another in defense.

This eternal push and pull of adversary and defender can be an enormous drain on a company’s resources. Especially in a field undergoing an increasingly severe labor shortage.³ Cost is often a major factor in any budget, thus this limitation places prohibitive restrictions on the quality and frequency of assessments smaller organizations can afford.
